If Halloween finds you feeling hungry for forbidden flesh, then feast on these zombie apps. There’s enough shambling goodness here to quell even the heartiest undead appetite.
1. Zombie Highway
When we first reviewed this game, we found it to be one of the better zombie app games in the App Store. Its endless-runner action fed that “one more time” feeling that great games have, while its dynamic recreation of a classic zombie movie moment — the desperate race to get away from the unead — hit all the right notes. And since our initial review, Zombie Highway has gotten even better, adding more levels, more weapons, AND the ability to run down zombies with your SUV. It’s an excellent app that any zombie lover should experience.
2. Zombie Smash
Zombie Smash is a game that, like Zombie Highway, does a spectacular job of recreating an archetypal zombie experience — in this case, the desperate struggle to barricade a farmhouse against the shambling horde. That’s right, it’s Night of the Living Dead on your iPhone, and Zombie Smash does it almost to perfection. The game has gotten even better since our review, with the addition of the tongue-in-cheek World Cup Soccer mode, where you can dress the zombies in the colors of your team’s most hated rival and the kill, kill, kill! It’s a perfect Halloween treat.
3. Plants vs. Zombies
As one of the most popular games in the App Store and a perennial resident of the Top Paid and Top Grossing lists, Plants vs. Zombies is a game that probably transcends a meager label like “zombie game.” But since it has zombies aplenty, we have to mention it here. It’s a tower defense game that brings excellent design, spectacular graphics, and even zombies in flippers. If you haven’t played PvZ yet (and you probably have), you owe it to yourself to try it.
4. Infect em All [formerly Infection: Zombies]
This app, alone of all the zombie apps here, gives you the chance to live the Halloween dream: to be a zombie! In Infect Em All, your goal is to either infect or consume the humans. Of course, they get to fight back, arming themselves with everything from briefcases to bazookas. It’s a fun time. Who can’t resist the chance to
5. Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies
In terms of that haunted, Halloween-ish ambiance, there’s perhaps no better app on this list than Call of Duty: World at War: Zombies. In this game, you must fight your way through war-torn ruins and blasted battlescapes while dodging the hungry dead. The game controls well, features great level design, and — most importantly — lets you gun down plenty of undead Nazis.
And to make it even better, since our original review declared it “nearly perfect,” the game has doubled its content (wrapping in the boards originally released as COD: WAW: Z2) and halved its price. It’s a game perfect for playing late into Halloween night.
